How to Convert a Percent to a Fraction
To convert a percent to a fraction:
- Remove the percent symbol and use that number as the numerator (top) of your fraction and 100 as the denominator (bottom) of the fraction.
- If your numerator has decimals, convert it to a whole number. For every n decimal places in the numerator, multiply the numerator and denominator by 10ⁿ.
- Find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both the numerator and denominator by the GCF to simplify your fraction.
- When possible, you can then simplify the fraction to a mixed number fraction.
Example of converting 25% to a fraction:
GCF of 25 and 100 = 25
(25 / 25) / (100 / 25) = 1/4
Example of converting 20.55% to a fraction:
(20.55 * 100) / (100 * 100) = 2055/10000
GCF = 5
(2055 / 5) / (10000 / 5) = 411/2000
Example of converting 125% to a fraction:
GCF = 25
(125 / 25) / (100 / 25) = 5/4
5/4 = 1 1/4
