What Does Vig Mean in Betting? (also known as "Juice" and "House Edge")

Vig, short for vigorish, is the house edge in sports betting. By adding vig or "juice" to their betting odds, sportsbooks can guarantee that they'll profit regardless of the outcome of a game.

A common example of vig is both sides of a 2-way bet having -110 American odds (roughly 1.91 in decimal odds). At -110 American odds, a winning $100 bet will profit $90.91. However, a losing $100 bet will lose $100.

The example above shows how vig helps sportsbooks ensure a profit. If a sportsbook had an equal amount of money wagered on both sides of this 2-way bet, they'd profit $9.09 for every $200 wagered ($100 wagered on each side for $200 of total bets - $190.91 paid to winners = $9.09 profit).

What are No-Vig Odds (Vig-Free, Fair Odds)

No-vig odds (also known as "vig-free" or "fair odds") remove vig to show you the real odds a bet has to win. In the example above, where both sides of a 2-way bet were -110, the fair odds for each side are +100. In other words, the chance of winning for both sides would be 50%.

How to Calculate Vig-Free Odds

Below, we explain how to calculate vig-free odds for popular odds formats.

How to Calculate No-Vig Odds for American Odds

To calculate the no-vig odds for odds in the American odds format, we first have to find the implied probability of each side. You can calculate implied probability using the following formula:

Implied Probability = ((-1 * Odds) / (-1 * Odds + 100))

Using our previous example, where both sides have -110 odds, the implied probability for both sides is 52.38%.

((-1 * -110) / (-1 * -110 + 100)) = 110 / (110 + 100) = 110 / 210 = 0.5238 or 52.38%

Both sides implied probability is 52.38%, combining to total 104.76%. The additional 4.76% is the vig the sportsbook added to their odds.

To remove the vig, divide each side's implied probability by the total combined implied probability:

52.38 / 104.76 = 0.5 or 50%

How to Calculate No-Vig Odds for Decimal Odds

To calculate vig-free odds for odds in the decimal odds format, start by finding the implied probability of each side of a bet. To calculate the implied probability for decimal odds, use the following formula:

Implied Probability = 1 / Odds

Using the previous example, where both sides of a 2-way outcome had 1.91 decimal odds, the implied probability for both sides is 52.36%.

1 / 1.91 = 0.5236 or 52.36%

Both sides have an implied probability of 52.36%, combining to total 104.72%. The additional 4.72% is the vig added by the sportsbook.

To remove the vig, divide each side's implied probability by the total combined implied probability:

52.36 / 104.72 = 0.5 or 50%
